I listened to Otis Redding all night—these ears of mine listen to Otis Redding all night, everynight, recently—and he made Bush’s farewell address all the more pathetic.
My mother boycotted it, but she’ll be watching the Inauguration from the elementary school where she works.

Well, on a note of fervent hopefulness, Tuesday approaches. Arrangements have been made to have our entire school in the multipurpose room on Tuesday at noon to see the swearing in. The MOST complex issue was getting the principal and the lunch ladies on board to shift the two lunch periods forward by a mere twenty minutes. You would think we were relaunching the Normandy invasion.

And quickly moves onto more important matters:

What makes red velvet cupcakes red velvet? I am suspecting it’s a healthy dose of Red #5 but perhaps I’m too cynical and I’m sure they will be delicious! My friend Melba from Port Gibson, Mississippi waxes poetic about something called jelly cake — can you ask around and see if that’s just a regular layer cake with jelly in the middle of the layers? That is what I suspect. I am thinking of making one for her birthday this year.

Insights, Southerners? I propose red velvet & jelly cakes for Tuesday parties, making us a unified nation of emotional eaters.
